Sari'Tonas: See also: Draekon. The Sari'Tonas are an ancient and highly xenophobic civilization. Any planets attempting to make even the most benign of contact will be vehemently ignored, possibly even threatened if they do not discontinue contact immediately. Thus, little is known about their history or culture. They are technologically advanced, peaceful amongst each other and wish nothing more than for the rest of the universe to leave them alone. They are incredibly long-lived, the average lifespan may be 1000 years or more, Terran time.
Sari'Tonas look much like your average humanoid; having five-digited appendages and being plantigrade. If the nails on hands and feet are allowed to grow, long, silver talons can form in a matter of days. Most prefer to keep nails cut short, for allowing the talons to grow is considered a "bestial" and base attribute. They are unusually light complected, with skin tones that range from white to a blueish-gray, eye colors ranging in the blues, greens and grays, and hair colors from medium gray to medium blonde and pure white. Their ears are triangular in shape, pointing back toward the back of the head, and have restricted mobility. They can move up and down, but cannot twist from side to side. They also have very long, prehensile tails.
Piercings in the right ear are how other Sari'Tonas identify each other. A certain number of earrings, location on the ear and the colors of the stones "spell" out ancient familial lines. Veldrin, for example, will remove all but three piercings and replace the colored stones of their family names with all black, blue, or silver stones, depending on the length of their "migration".
:>>Veldrin, "Shadows": In every society, there are those who refuse to follow the norm. Anyone who wishes to leave Sari'Tonas is considered to be an eccentric, and are the "black sheep" of the family. Though they have the technology for spaceflight, the Sari'Tonas refuse to put it to such use for fear that it will draw all sorts of unwelcome outsiders. But, deep in the catacombs of the main underground city lies a portal that allows transportation via the Nexus to other worlds. Those who wish to leave are not prevented, but are forever dishonored in the eyes of their families and the whole of society. They are allotted a food supply and can take any item they wish with them, but are not allowed to return, ever.
Those who leave Sari'Tonas are called Veldrin and are immediately erased from all records, replaced with simply the word "Veldrin" on the family tree. What the Sari'Tonas do not know is that over the years, the Veldrin have secretly re-routed the landing point of the portal from the barren planet it once led to, to a moon of an inhabited planet with the permission and assistance of the planet's government. There they have created their own "world" and built a place called Safehouse. This place acts as a buffer between the new Veldrin and the rest of the universe.
With the government's help, Safehouse has set up a program to "foster off" new Veldrin with families from nearby worlds. Most Sari'Tonas are very young when they become Veldrin, what can be considered "pre-teens" to "teenagers". The new Veldrin are partnered with families and individuals native to the planet they are sent to in order to learn the culture and rules of their adoptive home. The families will rename the Veldrin with something more common in their culture to help them adapt, as well as to give psychological closure to their "disownment" from their former home. Sari'Tonas are surprisingly adaptable beings, melding in with whatever culture they wish with uncanny skill and speed, as little as two to five years.
All Veldrin are highly skilled at working with various bits of technology, robotics, cybernetics - anything that has to do with circuitry, wiring, software, or hardware. It has been only recently discovered that a select few Veldrin are capable of learning any magical skills, and those that can work with magic show a complete lack of skill toward working with technology, and vice versa. This number is incredibly small, considering that only one out of a million Sari'Tonas become Veldrin, and there are only twenty or so recorded in Safehouse's records alive today. Maybe five out of those twenty are able to learn and use magic.
