A few hours later Kassandra woke with a brilliant headache. "Oh..." she moaned and tried to sit up, only to fall back when stars shot across her vision. "Whoa, stay down kid, moving will only make it worse." Y'les quickly came to the bedside and sat down. Voices mumbled in the back of Kassandra's mind, worsening her headache. "They're still there." she groaned, bringing her hands weakly up to her ears. He offered her the diluted fellis and said, "Drink this and it'll stop." She took the cup and drank it, wincing at the bitterness. Eyes wide with fear, she asked Y'les, "Am I going crazy?" once the fellis had taken affect. He chuckled softy and shook his head. "No, Kass...you're not going crazy. You just have a gift, a special one once you've been trained up a bit."
Outside on the ledge, the scrape of claws and rustle of wings signaled Kayla's arrival. "Better?" she asked immediately upon entering the sleeping chamber. "Depends on what you'd call better." she replied, blinking drowsily. "Oh, I know how you feel, believe me..." she said, pulling a chair up to the side of the bed and waving Y'les off. Kassandra looked up at her. "You can hear other dragons too?" Kayla nodded. "But when I found out it didn't come as such a ....blunt thing. I grew up in weyrs, many different ones, so I was used to it and learned how to close off a part of it so I wasn't driven nuts. You wouldn't believe how the dragons chattered at night..." she stopped and sighed, shaking her head.
"Anyway, I wanted to offer you a place at this weyr. I'm going to help you with your gift. Who knows, you might be able to Impress." she smiled. "I know Kadith has helped me with mine." With a nod, Kayla pointed out the huge gold looking curiously in on them. "Oh..." Kassandra breathed. "She's beautiful." The gold rumbled in agreement and went to lay on the ledge. "That she is." Kayla said, laughing. "Do you want to stay?" Y'les asked, stepping forward. "I'd love to!" Kassandra said, then winced at the volume of her own voice. "Wonderful! We'll start working tomorrow.. rest up until then and get used to fellis of awhile." Kayla said, smiled then hurried out of the weyr.
Y'les approached her and took Kayla's seat. "I'm glad you're staying, but I guess the Gather is out of the question, huh?" he smiled sadly at her. "Yes, I'm afraid so...but that doesn't mean that you can't go enjoy it." she urged him. "No, I'm not going if you're not. Would you like me to go to your house and get your things?" Kassandra sighed and stared at the blankets that covered her. "Yes, please...oh, and don't forget Etolie. And tell Mama that I'm sorry, but I need to do this. Oh! and don't forget my sword!" Y'les hugged her gently goodbye and left. I wonder if I'm doing the right thing she thought, the stopped because it hurt. "It was definitely the right thing to do." she muttered into the empty room, then settled back under the covers to try and sleep.
