What a surprise Zohariel found in this strange new place. The first shock was the untimely tearing of all it's inhabitants and their possessions to an entirely different planet. For him, it had been worse than his first trip between. Then, he'd had warning; but this time no one had warning. He'd stayed a wolf for a sevenday after the shift, and snapped at anyone who tried to soothe him. Another surprise was that even before the move, shape-shifters weren't as uncommon as he had previously thought. Even the Eyrlass was a shifter, a leopard one at that. They had taught him how to change from one form to another without a dragons coaxing and he had mastered it very well by now.
Even his little pet Iven had changed somewhat. Others delighted in teaching the creature new words and hearing him repeat them, and he had learned enough to form semi-complete sentences. "Hungry." Even though, after months with Zohariel barely speaking, he still continued to use single-words. "I am too, let's see if there's anything left from lunch." He sat Iven onto his shoulder and walked from his dorm to the kitchens, finding a few meat rolls left along with chopped raw meat for Iven. The day was pleasant, so he strolled around the exterior. It was fairly familiar to him now, he had always enjoyed exploring and had joined a party of dragonriders in his wolf form to find out where they had ended up.
Screams and shouts drew his gaze from the sky to the waters that seemed prevalent on this planet. Some of the candidates were playing, using the water to cool off in the increasing heat. He no longer considered himself a person, not like them anyway, and never socialized. Their help was much appreciated and it slightly restored his faith in humans, which was good since he'd probably be spending more time around them.
A cool night fell on the Eyr and Zohariel sat on a grassy hill, gazing up at the expansive night sky. The stars glittered down on him, and instinctively he searched for the Red Star. It still startled him not to see it somewhere in the inky blackness of space. Soft whimpers at his side alerted Zohariel to Ivan tugging on his sleeve.
"Draggy, Echi! Draggy crack. Crack crack!" He was frantically trying to tell him something, but even with his new vocabulary seemed to be unable to find the right words. "Draggy crack? What...oh, do you mean dragon? Dragons cracking?" Iven insistently jerked at the bottom of his shirt as Zohariel sat up and searched the Eyr for activity. Sure enough, a faint humming could be heard, punctuated by bugles. People swarmed around and fires were lit. Quickly shifting to his wolf form, Zohariel gently lifted Ivan and placed him in a puch he'd had made for the little creature to ride, and took off toward the eyr. Once inside, he kept that form and flopped on the black sands to wait for the eggs to hatch, panting and getting odd looks from the other candidates.
No one was even sure this clutch would hatch, after the tumultuous move. None so much as shook while people settled in to watch, and the white dam looked on earnestly. Before long, one egg began to rock slowly, as if sensing the tense atmosphere and wanting to build suspense. At last, the egg split to reveal twin greens. Well, they technically weren't green...he couldn't think of a color to describe them. They bonded, one to a girl with green hair -"How fitting"- and the other to a large golden bird type thing someone called a gryphon. No sooner had the twin greens and their new riders left the sands did two more eggs crack and split, revealing a white and a brown. The white creeled softly and painfully as a girl approached it. The tiny creature's wing was tangled, and once freed he was quite stunning indeed. "How interesting," Zohariel thought, "it would be for me to bond a white...but I doubt it. None have them have so much as glanced at me." Resolute in the fact that he was just to be left behind, he set to grooming his paws, wet from the dew with the dark sands clinging to his fur.
The brownish dragon still remained where he was, as he watched his brother bond to the young woman. His starry body also reflected what looked like black holes and the milky way, though both of those things meant nothing to those who had not come from a space-faring planet. He couldn't think why he was seeing a white wolf in his mind, when he knew that his bond had to be there. There was not a possible way that a wolf could fly with the space-covered hatchling once he could actually, was there?? Iven let out little yipping sounds at every dragonet that passed, as if upset that they hadn't realized that Zohariel was a perfectly good bond! He didn't realize that there was just one dragon who would do for the white wolf, and it had finally taken notice because of Ivan's red fur.
I'm not going to let any other humans hurt you, Ech'inee, So startled by the dragon speaking to him, and using his wolf-name, Zohariel changed into his human form to find a shimmering brown dragonet sitting in front of him with tiny wings half spread as if to sheild him from the crowds behind. "Kohavaeth.." The words came unbidden to his lips, and he didn't know how he knew the name. besides, the Eyrlass is a shifter, do you really think that she'd let anything happen to you, Z'riel?? He shook his head and Kohavaeth glanced down at Iven, who was hiding from this new and huge (to him) brown thing behind Z'riel's foot. Sensing the waves of hunger coming off of his new bond, he quickly intervened. "That would be Iven, Kohavaeth. He's not your first meal, or any meal." he said gently, understanding the animal thought that a smaller creature was fit for prey.
Iven climbed up into Z'riel's pocket and they left the sands as more eggs began to hatch. Two bowls of meat later, Z'riel had learned more about his dragon. His exact color, for instance. "Diaspore-space...such a large name for something as simple as a color." Just a color? Why we all have celestial bodies and gemstone colors on our hides, doesn't that deserve a complex name? Laughing, he softly stroked the eye-ridges of Kohavaeth, wishing even more that his mother were here now. She is, Ech'inee. She can see you, and is very proud. "How do you know that?" The little brown winked a rainbow eye at him. It's a secret. And I'm still hungry! Where'd the meat-lady go?
